We can either rise to the occasion when faced with stressor or we can succumb to its feet.   Remember that small am ounts of stress is good for you if you know how to react to it.  For example, if you are faced with a deadline at work to bring a new product to market.  That will make anyone stress.  

But that stress  will give you that extra edge to complete and bring about a superior product as a result of that stress.  That is, if you know how to handle it.  If you do not know how to handle the stress of a deadline, you will succumb to it and turn in a crappy product.

Remember, stress in small dosages is good when you know how to handle it effectively.  However prolonged stress will wear your body down emotionally and physically.

Causes of Stress

Many times when we are under stress we look to any number of things that bring stress into our lives. From work, to money to family to day to day annoyances, it seems there is no end to the causes of stress in or lives. However, the causes of stress may not be what you think they are. Often it is our perception of or our reaction to life’s ups and downs that cause us stress.

Anything that causes stress is known as a stressor, and they aren’t necessarily bad for us. Being promoted at work is a stressor, but it usually is perceived as a positive thing.

Of course, everyone perceives stress in their own unique way. A shy person may become stressed when invited to a social gathering, while a gregarious person will experience positive feelings of comfort and relaxation.

There are six common external causes of stress. These are family, relationships, money problems, work, being overly busy and major life changes such as marriage or buying a home. The most common internal stressors are uncertainty, unrealistic expectations, negative inner speech, lack of assertiveness and struggling with pessimism or perfectionism. One can see how suffering from these internal causes of stress would also impact ones reaction to external causes as well.

Whatever personal causes of stress you may experience, there is reason to take stress seriously. Stress has been shown to lead to a multitude of health problems.

Some causes of stress are more prevalent than others. The number one cause of stress comes from financial problems. This can be particularly difficult for parents or spouses who are supporting others in addition to themselves.

After that comes stress from the workplace, either from inter office pressure or the fear of losing a job. Stress at work is created when an individual’s needs or abilities do not match the demands of the job or vice versa. School can even be a cause of stress for students.

Family and other personal relationships are another big cause of stress, followed by health and every day disturbances. Too often these causes of stress seem to converge all at once until it is hard to even see where one begins and the other ends. This is why clear perception of the causes of stress is so important.

We have identified the major causes of stress in today’s world. However, causes of stress will affect people differently, as above mentioned, due to perceptions and reactions.

When we encounter a stress we cannot control, such as the illness of a loved one, or the loss of a job, it so often our perception of the stress that can make the difference between managing stress and giving in to the pressure. There are three factors that present themselves in those experiencing stress.

These are frustration, conflicts, and pressures. Knowing our limits and capabilities can go a long way in dealing with stress. A change of attitude (perception) can be the key to turn a major stress to a minor one.

Three simple steps can help us deal with the causes of stress. These are acceptance of the inevitable, being open to change, and a willingness to adapt and learn something new. Often an unflinching mind state can cripple us and make us perceive stress that isn’t necessarily there.
